As a result of the indoor climbing industry's growing need for qualified routesetters and training resources, the CWA is beginning the process of forming a routesetting program committee. The committee will be responsible for supporting CWA members’ routesetting operations by developing resources such as a routesetting guide, instructional curricula, and training. These resources will assist in the professional development of routesetters, provide knowledge and training to advance in their careers, and prepare routesetters for the CWA Work-at-Height Certification Program. The program will focus on commercial routesetting and will not address competition setting.

Bill Zimmermann, CEO of the CWA, said, “Routesetters are an important constituency for the CWA and we are excited to be able to focus time and resources on this group of professionals in our industry. It is clear that routesetting is a specialized skill and we need to develop more competent routesetters to meet the demand for these workers as our industry grows.”

The committee will initially focus on developing shared resources for the CWA membership. “I would like to see the committee tackle a revision of the CWA Routesetting Guide, which has been out of print, and then move quickly to develop trainings for routesetters based on the Guide,” Zimmermann said. The trainings and clinics will address a training gap for commercial routesetters and help to prepare routesetters for the new Work-at-Height Certification Program. Stay tuned for more information which will be provided to members as soon as arrangements are finalized.
